Cyclone and severe-storm preparation depends on early decisions, marina rules and a realistic understanding of what the owner can safely complete.
Before the season
Obtain the marina or mooring-area plan, confirm whether the vessel stays, relocates or comes ashore, and identify who may move it. Inspect lines, attachment points, batteries, pumps, watertight closures and insurance requirements. Keep owner and emergency contacts current.
When conditions begin developing
Monitor official forecasts and local harbour directions. Fuel and relocate only while authorities, conditions and the plan allow. Remove or secure loose deck equipment, sails, covers, tenders and items that increase windage.
When the facility activates its plan
Follow access cut-offs and staff instructions. Do not improvise a new location that transfers risk to neighbouring vessels. Double arrangements only in a way approved for the berth or mooring, protect against chafe and leave the vessel in the agreed configuration.
When personal safety takes priority
Do not remain aboard unless an authorised plan specifically requires qualified personnel to do so. Leave early enough to avoid travel during hazardous conditions. Property preparation must never displace preservation of life.
After the event
Wait for access clearance, photograph condition before disturbing damage, prevent pollution where safe and notify the marina and insurer. Treat electrical systems, submerged equipment and strained structures cautiously.
